Soon after moving into our house, we did our research and determined that a labrador retriever was the perfect dog for us. Labs are rugged for hiking, camping, and fishing, are loyal and kind, and have a great overall temperament. Ultimately, we found ourselves at a backyard breeder's house in Magna, where we picked the liveliest pup in the litter (marking her toenail with nail polish so we wouldn't confuse her with the others), and brought her home. At six weeks old, Daisy became the newest member of the Goodrich family.
From the moment we brought her home, Daisy was both a frustration and a joy. She frustrated us by jumping
As time passed, the hoped-for and expected children didn't come. Instead, it was Daisy (and later, Jax), and just Heidi and I. As silly as it sounds, Daisy really did become a part of our family. She gave us unconditional loyalty and naughtiness, and we simply shook our heads and muttered about how disobedient and hyper she was, while loving her the entire time. Later, when we adopted Tiana, Daisy helped ease the way for Tiana's transition, because the home where Tiana came from also had a lab. Daisy's presence helped Tiana feel comfortable and familiar when she joined our family. Up to today, Daisy had been with us for almost seven years--the majority of our marriage. I can honestly say that Daisy made my life and our family's life fuller and more meaningful.

Today, however, our adventures with Daisy came to an abrupt and tragic end. This morning Daisy got into some slug and snail bait that we sprinkled in the flower beds last night. Unbeknownst to us, slug and snail bait is palatable to some dogs, and also extremely toxic (metaldehyde). After ingesting the bait this morning, Daisy began having muscle spasms, shakes, and seizures. She then laid down to rest on the lawn near her kennel, and she died there within a few minutes. Heidi called me at work and told me between tears what had happened. I immediately headed home. When I got there, Daisy was laying where she died, covered with a blanket. We dug a grave for Daisy and buried her in the southeast flower bed by the corner of our property. We had a mini-funeral of sorts, and Heidi, Tiana, and I all talked about our favorite things about Daisy. Heidi liked Daisy's never-ending energy, Tiana liked that sometimes Daisy would hold still enough to be petted, and I liked that Daisy was always a loyal friend who thought I was the greatest person in the world without regard to my numerous faults.
Daisy was a good dog who meant a lot to Heidi and I, and we're devastated that she's gone so suddenly and under such preventable, and therefore tragic, circumstances. We were only just beginning to enjoy the mellowness that came on as Daisy aged. Nonetheless, we're grateful to her for her companionship and loyalty. Daisy truly was a blessing in our lives that came at just the right time--when we needed her. Happy trails, Old Girl. We'll miss you. R.I.P.

I'll always remember good old Daisy. One of my fondest yet most painful memories of Daisy is when we went to San Rafael and poor Daisy rubbed the pads on her feet raw by running and sliding all over the sandstone. Then we watched as she would have spasms dealings with the booties on her feet. We're so sorry for your loss because we know what she meant to you guys. Thanks for the fun memories Daisy!

Wow, I'm so sorry guys. I know how much you loved her.
I remember how we would take Daisey with us when we would go to a fence jobs. Somehow she confused me with the toilet and the puke bowl..... We would also come back from working and find her paw prints on the windows and laugh about the messages she left us. I'm laughing right now as I think about how she lightened up the tiring days of working. - Chad
Your post made me cry. I'm sorry about Daisy. It was always fun watching our kids interact with Daisy for the first time. I know she meant a lot to you guys. She'll be greatly missed.
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your cute pup. What a cute tribute to her and I'm sure there will be a void in your hearts for a long time. Hang in there and keep the memories alive!

I too, am so sorry for you guys. You truly lost a loved and devoted member of the family.
Oh "Crazy Daisy" - she always was my favorite. I loved that whenever I came over she was always there and wanting to play, and more excited to see me than anyone else! She knew exactly what it meant to be a dog, and relished every moment. She was a joy to be with and I'm sure she'll keep on raising hell up in doggy heaven!
Daisy will be missed. We are so sorry for your loss. It's hard for me to imagine the Goodrich family with out a couple of labs.
This is very sad, sudden, shocking news! I am so sorry to hear about this. Daisy, or as I always called her, Daahhhyyysy, will be very missed. She was a beautiful, spazzy dog who brightened my day each time she mawled/scratched/greeted me when we would come over to visit. I will miss her wagging tail and hilarious antics. She was lucky to be able to spend her days with such a great family who loved her as all dogs deserve to be loved. We love you, Eric and Heidi!!

Your post got me teary eyed-so sorry she is gone.
Thanks so much for posting this wonderful tribute to Daisy. It is hard to imagine you and Heidi without Daisy. We will all miss her. She was so much a part of your life. We always knew when Daisy was around. She was always so happy to see everyone who came to the door. We will all miss her. She was so full of life and love for everyone.
Oh my goodness:( I haven't checked your blog for some time now and when I did I couldn't believe what I was reading, I cannot stop crying:( I have never loved any dog so much as I loved "Daisy"! I enjoyed watching the dogs last summer and loading them up in the Jeep and taking them down to the park! So sorry that this had to happen, Jax must be so sad:( Love you all so much!
Since everyone else is sharing Daisy memories I have to add my absolute favorite. We were river rafting/camping on some freezing cold river when Jax and Daisy jumped all over Reed's fishing poles and broke them. Reed lost his temper, swore, and threw the dogs out of the raft. Meanwhile we all laughed our heads off from a safe distance on the other side of the river.
That is so sad I am so sorry. Daisy was such a great fun loving dog. My kids sure loved her. I know she meant so much to you and I remember when you got her. How is Jax doing. I bet he misses her. never forget her and all the great memories. Great tribute and post to her!
